Registering domain names
We advise that you try and register all of your domain names with the same registrar. This will help you with future management and ensuring that you can easily maintain domain renewals.
It is common practice for web design agencies to offer to register and manage the domain names for you. This can take the hassle out of the process as they will have the knowledge in order to set it up but you need to make sure of the following before agreeing to it.
- The domain name will be registered in your name at all times.
- The domain names will remain your property at all times even if you terminate the contract with the agency.
- You will have access to the domains control panel so you can make your own changes if needed or processes will be in place to enable you to request changes.
- Ensure that the agency have an automatic renewal process in place to ensure that your domain name renewal is never forgotten.
- Clarify what will happen to the domain in the event of a dispute.
Always obtain the above in writing from the agency prior to letting them commence with the registration process. We advise that you have the documents checked out by your legal advice.
If you decide to register the domains yourself, we personally use and recommend the following company. You can also use their sites to see if your chosen domain name is available:
